“In a world addicted to speed, slowness is a superpower.”
Carl Honoré is a London-based writer and broadcaster and the voice of the global Slow Movement. His bestselling books have been published in 35 languages. His two main-stage TED Talk have racked up million of views.
Carl's message is simple, counterintuitive and game-changing: to thrive in a fast world, you have to slow down. Whether online or in-person, Carl's keynotes and workshops are dynamic, inspiring, informative and full of humour. His audiences range from business leaders, entrepreneurs and sales professionals to engineers, lawyers and medical practitioners. The Wall Street Journal hailed Carl as “an in-demand spokesman on slowness.” CBC Radio called him “the world's leading evangelist for the Slow Movement.” Huffington Post dubbed him the “unofficial godfather of a growing cultural shift toward slowing down."
His first book, In Praise of Slow, chronicles the global trend toward putting on the brakes in everything from work to food to parenting. The Financial Times said it is “to the Slow Movement what Das Kapital is to communism.”
Carl’s second book, Under Pressure, explores how to raise and educate children in a fast world and was hailed by Time as a “gospel of the Slow Parenting movement.” Carl presented a television show called Frantic Family Rescue on Australia’s ABC 1.
He sits on the board of a K-18 school in New York City.
Carl’s third book, The Slow Fix, explores how to tackle complex problems in every walk of life, from health and relationships to business and politics, without falling for superficial, short-term quick fixes. Carl fronted a series for BBC Radio 4 called The Slow Coach and presented a television show called Frantic Family Rescue on Australia’s ABC 1.
Carl’s latest book, Bolder: How To Age Better And Feel Better About Aging, demolishes ageist stereotypes and shows how companies and society in general can benefit from embracing ageing and taking a multigenerational approach.
While researching In Praise of Slow, Carl was slapped with a speeding ticket...
NB: Carl can present in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.

LABOR SHORTAGE: MULTIGÉNÉRATIONAL WORKFORCES, A SOLUTION?
Older workers are a rich resource waiting to be tapped. Now is the time to embrace ageing as a superpower at work – and beyond.
To drive this cultural revolution, we need to shoot down the myth that ageing is all about decline. The truth is that older staff bring so much to the party:
-
Better social skills
-
Rich creativity
-
More entrepreneurial smarts
-
Higher productivity
-
A hunger to learn
-
A strong desire to be of service
-
A knack for bringing out the best in others
-
More resilient, especially in times of crisis
-
Better on detail-oriented tasks
-
Strong leadership ability
I will use examples from around the world to show how and why older workers can be a boon in every sector. Also why the future belongs to companies that embrace multigenerational working, not only elders, but also young people.
The message throughout is that we have it within our power to make ageing our ally. My tone will be upbeat. My aim is to inspire the audience to make the most of the longevity revolution at work – and in their own lives.
Everyone, whatever their age, will go away feeling more optimistic about the future!
